Newcastle Freakscene 1990-1995

ABC RADIO

Did you tree dance to The Plants, rock out to the Terraplanes, slam dance to the Hoax, get dark and moody with The Hanged Man or disco to Headbin? Did you frequent venues like The East Room, Tattersalls,

The Air Force Club or The Hunter on Hunter? Did you attend crazy house parties at the likes of Brown St, Perkins St or Union St? The you may be interested to learn about the Newcastle Freakscene 1990-1995 Facebook group.

Today on the 1233 ABC Newcastle afternoon program, members of some of those groups spoke to Carol Duncan about a reunion this this Saturday night, as part of the free annual V8 Ball gig at The Lass O'Gowrie. Anthony Scully (Terraplanes), Anthony Dean and Geoff Mullard (The Hoax, Sandpaper) spoke about some of the bands from the era, using material from the My Beautiful Pigeonhole compilation CD and some other rare vinyl.

Some of the bands we managed to squeeze into 45 minutes of radio include The Porkers, The Terraplanes, The Hoax, The Goddards, The Longknives, Vrag, The Galore, Me Me Me, The Hanged Man, Shrine (The), The Wash, Ward Jane and Headbin. Creator of the popular (300 members and counting) Facebook group Mark Snelson - aka Lodge aka Fastik Mindy aka Snelvis - couldn't make it, but he was one of scores of people who sent SMS messages during the program to add their recollecrtions.

If you can't get to the gig, have a listen here and leave you comments
