Big Week For Australia

THE NEWCASTLE HERALD - Letter To The Editor

WHAT a tumultuous week it’s been in Australia’s business, sporting and political life- a week in which we were witness to actual and metaphorical deaths, and a rebirth of the Australian spirit.

We read with sadness of the tragic deaths of Australian businessmen from mining company Sundance Resources, who ventured beyond our shores to make their mark in the world and fulfil their business dreams.

On the sporting field, we witnessed the failure of the Socceroos to qualify for the next round of the World Cup, after being lambasted by the broader Australian public for the “unAustralian” way they performed in their opening match.

And in the political arena, Australians viewed the metaphorical assassination of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

In all three instances, these tragic and humbling events also showed something about the Australian and human spirit.

In Sundance Resources, we’ve seen a former chairman who has returned to lead and rebuild the company, to honour those who lost their lives and ensure their dreams are realised.

On the sporting front, we witnessed the Socceroos redeem themselves with performances of passion and fortitude, and restore pride in the green and gold.

And in the political arena, we saw a Prime Minister who fell on his sword with dignity, in the midst of personal pain for all to see.

The week may have started with a heavy heart. By week’s end, it revealed that in adversity, Australian resilience, pride and dignity will shine through.
