Abolish State Governments

OBELISK INSIGHT

In light of the ICAC findings which have resulted in Newcastle, Charlestown and Swansea unrepresented in our State Parliament, perhaps the time is ripe to reevaluate our three tiers of Government.

We need a new way of governing in the 21st century which ensures government continues to maintain its relevancy and accountable to the people it is meant to serve.

It also offers a great opportunity in reducing duplication and inconsistencies in laws and programs; increased transparency in governing; cost- savings in the millions; and improved decision-making and power at the grass- roots local level.

Serious consideration must be given to abolishing the State tier of government. Councils within the Hunter region should actively initiate serious discussions and community engagement on amalgamating and establishing ‘Super Councils’ within the Hunter.

The earlier councils within the Hunter region amalgamate, the sooner it enables the region with greater bargaining clout in seeking government funding and support, winning tenders, development of an overarching integrated plan for our region, delivering greater prosperity, and having greater certainty in controlling our region’s destiny.
